Where to Find Thai Traditional and Classic Dance Shows in Bangkok and Chiang Mai
Thailand is a favorite vacation destination for people all over the world. According to Forbes (2018), Thailand’s capital city of Bangkok was the most visited city in the world for three straight years in a row. Folks flock to the country for many reasons; it is inexpensive, rich in culture and history, and has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Not to mention mouthwatering foods and more!
With the country being the only southeast Asian country that was never colonized, Thailand maintains a strong culture and traditions. That being said, one of the things that might not always make it on a traveler’s list of things to do is see a Thai Traditional or Classical dance.
If you’re really into history, culture and the arts, seeing a live Thai Classical Dance should be on top of your to-do list. It is a feast for the eyes and ears as the dancers are adorned with ornate costumes and jewelry. You will also appreciate the sounds of traditional instruments being played during these dances.
This entertainment was once only afforded to Royalty. It can now be enjoyed by everyone. Here’s where you can go to see a show while in Bangkok and Chiang Mai.
In Bangkok
Bangkok has the most options for shows. Most shows are performed during and after dinner. Here is a list of places to see them:
Siam Niramit Theater - You can find more information about the theater, shows and book tickets online siamniramit.com. Also available in Phuket.
Sala Rim Naam - Mandarin Oriental Hotel-Very classy and expensive and make sure you make a reservation. Visit mandarinorientalhotel.com for more information and book reservation. Recommended for luxury travelers.
Tuen Thep Thai Theater Restaurant - Dinner and show starts at $23. You can find more information here silomvillage.co.th. Recommended for budget travelers.
Dhow Cruise - If you love dinner cruises, you can also see a show on a Dhow Dinner Cruise for approximately $50 but not my favorite. You can book with your hotel or on Viator.com
In Chiang Mai
My top three favorites:
Old Chiang Mai Cultural Center - Don’t miss out on a unique opportunity to learn more Chiang Mai’s Lanna culture. Enjoy dinner and Khantoke, a variety of miniature dishes. Book online at oldchiangmai.com or on Trip Advisor for under $30. Recommended for the budget traveler.
Khumkhontoke - You can enjoy traditional Lanna style meal and entertainment starting at $20 per person. Halal and vegetarian options available. Book online at khumkhontoke.com. Recommended for all travelers.
Le Grand Lanna Restaurant at Dhara Dhevi Hotel - This is a 5-star hotel. The venue is small and intimate so a reservation is highly recommended. The dinner menu has many options with entrees starting just under $10 but with appetizer and drinks, most will end up spending at least $30. Please visit dharadhevi.com to see the dinner menu. Reservation is highly recommended. This is a hidden gem. I highly recommend this venue for luxury travelers or budget travelers who wish to splurge. It is well worth it. One of my favorite places to visit while in Chiang Mai. I also recommend visiting this place during the day. Beautiful hotel with nicely manicured grounds.
